Check out pictures on the York Newstimes

The Milligan Memorial Committee is inviting the public to a dedication ceremony and program scheduled for Saturday, August 14, 2010, for the three Nebraska state historical markers commemorating the World War II midair collisions that occurred on October 25, 1943, May 10, 1944 and September 8, 1944. The ceremony and program will also honor the 32 airmen, the six who survived and the 26 who made the ultimate sacrifice on Nebraska soil while conducting training maneuvers near Milligan.

The dedication ceremony will begin at 1 p.m. at the site of the markers, 1/2 mile North of Milligan, on Highway 41.  The dedication program will start at 3 p.m. in the Milligan Centennial Garden. Between the ceremony and program, the Milligan Czech Brass Band will play in the garden and a Black Hawk Helicopter will be on display directly west of the garden. A BBQ picnic dinner will follow the program.

Evening activities will move into the auditorium and starting at 6 p.m., Jerry Penry will have a slide presentation, highlighting the three crashes, followed by a question and answer session. The Milligan Legion Auxiliary Women will have a reception table and the big band sounds of the nine-piece Leo Lonnie Orchestra will provide music from the 1940's era. A display area will be set up in the auditorium and will include memorabilia from the Fairmont and Bruning Army Air Bases, photographs of the air bases taken during WWII, personal albums and scrapbooks and items brought for the display by the relatives of the airmen. The public is encouraged to bring lawn chairs for the activities in the Centennial Garden. There is no charge for all of the activities listed above, except for the BBQ picnic dinner.  In case of inclement weather, the activities will be moved into the Auditorium.
